Yoga, at its root, means "to join," or "to unite."   Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras decribe yoga's eight-limbed path:

  • Yama: common observances
  • Niyama: common restraints
  • Asana: body awareness/postures
  • Pranayama: breath/control of prana
  • Pratyahara: control of senses
  • Dharana: inner awareness
  • Dhyana: meditation transcending self
  • Samadhi: union transcending self

Each limb independent; yet collectively interwoven.  Any practice "limited" to a single branch's growth inherently informs and nurtures the others: awareness of self; connection beyond.

Hatha Yoga refers (primarily) to the practice of Asana, physical postures, and Pranayama, breath control.  Ashtanga, vinyasa, Iyengar, Bikram, yin, restorative and power yoga are all examples of Hatha Yoga. The word “hatha”  has a dual meaning / connotation: “willful” or “forceful”  (i.e., the yoga of action), and “sun” (ha) and “moon” (tha), (i.e., the yoga of balance).

Through meditation, the practicing yogi harmonizes conscious and subconscious awareness in presence and stillness.  Like meditation, yoga nidra or "yogic sleep" is a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping, in which the practitioner becomes systematically and increasingly aware of the inner world by following a set of guided instructions. The yogic goal of both paths, deep relaxation (yoga nidra) and meditation are the same: samadhi.
